In 2004 I saw Maceo Parker already once - at that time in the Traenenpalast. Now I wanted to see him again in any case - it could have been the last time.
Since the concert took place on Saturday, it was no problem that my wife would come with me, so I got 2 tickets. Admission was from 8pm - starting at 9pm. Shortly after 8:30pm we started to go towards Columbiadamm and had no problem to get in quickly. We were hardly inside the hall, just ordered a drink, when the music got louder with Prince's "1999". And a female voice - we couldn't look to the stage yet - announced Maceo and his band - but there wasn't much engagement in her voice - a bit like Christine Westermann at Zimmer Frei.
We then looked for a place where we could look to the stage - there was a lot of traffic there (near the bar), but that was justifiable.
Then they played the first song - I think I even heard a George Clinton & Parliament song ("Make my funk the PFunk") - anyway Maceo played on "Mothership is coming". Unfortunately I didn't find a list where the band members are described. Only the drummer I could identify with her name - the incredible Nikki Glaspie. Apart from that the band consisted of guitar, bass, keyboard, trombone - all men and another background female singer. The songs were in the usual funk framework ("Make it funky", "Pass The Peas"), even a bit slower stuff. He played own songs and wonderful versions of Marvyn Gaye and Ray Charles songs. Unfortunately the sound was mixed too quietly. You could hear the conversations at the back of the bar better than on stage. But we didn't let the good mood spoil us.
Maceo often switched between saxophone and flute - the vocals were manageable - he also sat briefly on the keyboard when Nikki Glaspie played a longer drum solo. The other band members had also rewarded their solo performances with applause from the audience.
Without a break - ok, in between there are always individual band members off the stage - then it went to 11:15pm - for the fact that Maceo is 75 years old, a proud achievement. Anyway, we went in a good mood towards home.
Funny notice: At one song within a guitar/bass-solo, Maceo, the trombone player and the female vocal were doin background vocals on one microphone. During singing Maceo turned around and put his hand before his mouth - checking that he has no bad breath but everything seemed to be ok.
