Living Colour was the absolute musical highlight this year for me.
The doors of the Lido - my first gig there - openend at 9 pm and I was a little bit late. But it hadn't start so far, so enough time to check out the audience and house. The Lido is a nice place taking maybe up to 800 people. It got filled and there was only one person I know. It was a mother from my kiez I was seeing from time to time.
There was an opener band called 'Lord Bishop Rocks' - 3 guys with guitar, bass and drum. They played some songs (also Hey Joe) and it sounds fair - nothing more to say.
I think it was after 10 when the show of Living Colour began. I was in the first line in front of Doug Wimbish's equipment - prepared with earsticks. The intro was the instrumental from "Stain" called "WTFF" - I used in my Power of equality cut - followed by "Ignorance is bliss". I got the vibe but recognized that the sound in the front is not good. So after some songs I was leaving the front, ordered a beer and looked for a better sound place somewhere in the middle of the Lido. They were playing almost all songs from the new record "The chair in the doorway" and some old hits like "Cult of personality", "Bi". When they were playing "Bi", Doug was making a very long solo with his bass - totally warped with special effects (sounding like a normal guitar) - and he was leaving the stage and played inside the audience. Also Vernon Reid and Will Calloun were doing long solos. Will was using lighting sticks when the stage was dark. Very effective. Also video sequences were shown on the wall behind the stage.
I think it was 12 when they finished the normal show. The audience was 'out of the house' ("aus dem Häuschen" - as the Germans say) and asked for more Living Colour. They came back and played some more songs. At the end Corey said they will be outside at the merchandizing table to sign posters, covers, etc.
I bought the new record there and was waiting that all four LCs were signing the booklet. I thanked them very much and were leaving the place late after 1 am.
Next working day was hard but was sweetened up by listening to the new record.
Here is "Bi" from another show but very similar to the Berlin gig.
