Music Review: Franti shines on 'Sunshine'

(Capitol Records)
Like a warm ray of sun breaking through the clouds, Michael Franti & Spearhead deliver just what is promised by the title of their latest release "The Sound of Sunshine."
The title track, which kicks off the record and then is revisited in a reworked version at the end, is the perfect bookend for this 11-track set that should only expand Franti's growing fan base.
Known for mixing rock, rap, reggae, soul and other styles into a musical gumbo all his own, Franti delivers songs that will force the listener to stand up and "Shake It," as he exhorts with the help of backing singer Lady Saw.
While not all of the songs live up to the best three or four, the strength of those tunes makes it easier to forgive the weaker ones.
CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: Inspired to record his seventh record after spending time in the hospital recovering from a ruptured appendix, Franti extolls listeners on "Hey Hey Hey" to "never let another moment slip away." It's a song even the healthiest of listeners can identify with.
