Michael Franti & Spearhead map winter outing
by Tjames Madison / LiveDaily Contributor
Michael Franti and Spearhead have mapped a headlining run across 2009's early days to support the act's latest studio set, September's "All Rebel Rockers."
The singer/activist and his band will count down the clock on 2008 with a pair of shows in Vancouver, British Columbia (12/30-31). Following Franti's solo adventure on Ft. Lauderdale's Jan. 4 Jam Cruise 7, the full group will kick off the winter outing Jan. 28 in Salt Lake City, UT. The 19-city trek runs through early March; dates are below.
The veteran production team of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare produced "All Rebel Rockers," Franti and Spearhead's follow-up to 2006's "Yell Fire!" The new set, recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, features guest appearances by Marie Daulne of Zap Mama and Jamaican actress/dancehall vocalist Cherine Anderson.
Several tunes from the album are streaming at Franti and Spearhead's website.
More recently, Franti and Spearhead recorded "Obama Song," which a press release calls a "tribute to the president elect Barack Obama" and a "celebration of the hope and optimism that has filled the hearts and minds of the country ever since the words uttered on the campaign trail, 'Yes We Can.'" The song is available as a free download through the group's website.
In addition to speaking his mind through his music, Franti is also an acclaimed lecturer for social justice and human rights. He has spoken at many top universities, including Yale, Georgetown and Stanford, and shared the stage with the likes of Bill Clinton, Mohammad Ali, Michael Moore, Ralph Nader and Gloria Steinem, according to his website.
