Michael Franti
Michael Franti by Ian Sullivan Cant
It’s hard to miss Michael Franti: super tall, dreaded, constantly walking the Earth without shoes and with a smile that could, as ascent/timeless staffer Chris McCann found out during last week’s concert in Montreal, literally turn a crowd into a hot, dancing pool of joy.

Musician, activist, poet and yogi, Michael Franti has been a tireless supporter of a variety of humanitarian causes, from peace in the Middle East to anti-poverty campaigns. In 2006 he released I Know I’m Not Alone, a film chronicling his trip through the Middle East in an intense effort to show “the human cost of war.”

Less than twenty-four hours before Chris’ conversation with Michael, President-elect Barack Obama had given his acceptance speech in Chicago’s Grant Park, signifying a beautiful and pivotal moment in the history of the United States, and indeed, the world.
