Multi-faceted musician RJD2 has just announced his eighth studio album, Visions Out Of Limelight, alongside the release of its lead single, "Through It All" (feat. Jamie Lidell). The album, set to come out on June 14th via RJ's Electrical Connections, joins his impressive discography that spans many different sounds, from hip-hop tracks to instrumental albums.
Visions Out Of Limelight takes inspiration from various sources, including TV theme songs of the '70s, '80s, and '90s, "I realized how incredibly composed and skillfully complex many of them were," shares RJ in a press release. The album's cover art features RJ buried up to his neck, serving as a dual homage to Funkadelic's Maggot Brain and Redman's Dare Iz A Darkside. Speaking about the upcoming album, RJ shares, "I have come to terms with the fact that the most impactful and lasting effort I can put forth in my limited time on Earth is to leave behind the best music I can, the timeless nature of recorded music and its ability to touch an unknown future listener makes it as close to a worthy endeavor as I'll ever attempt."
An expert at distorting genres, RJ plays in the realm of funk and soul. The song starts with water drop sounds before the introduction of drums, chords, and vocals by English singer Jamie Lidell. Liddell's soulful vocals glide over hypnotizing beats and piano stabs.
Check out the music video accompanying the single, directed by RJ and his son Charlie Kaiser-Krohn. It perfectly captures the song's free energy, with RJ playing different instruments in low-key locations such as parks, fields, and his studio, interposed with close-ups of Lidell's singing.
