Afro-futurist types Onipa have detailed their new album 'Off The Grid'.
The new album is their first on Peter Gabriel's Real World Records, and continues their emphatically creative adventures. Out on October 6th, new album 'Off The Grid' hinges on the chemistry between Tom Excell (Nubiyan Twist) and Kweku Sackey (K.O.G. & the Zongo Brigade).
Re-doubling their efforts, the duo were joined in the studio by a flurry of guests, including Moonchild Sanelly, David Walters, Dele Sosimi and Theon Cross.
Tom Excell explains further:
"The album represents a search for freedom from corruption, from mental and financial burdens and from technology that disempowers and divides. The sacred power of music allows us all a chance to transcend our worries and our egos. A deep respect for those that came before us, a duty of care towards the imprint we leave the next generation and a love of the earth that we live on. This album seeks to trace sound origins and traditions of Africa and highlight their importance in the global soundscapes of the present and future."
New single 'No Commando' is online now, and it's a terrific return, so deep and enriching while also rooting itself in that jacking sense of rhythm. The visual was shot in the Ghanian city of Accra, while the song itself taps into long-held traditions drawn from West African folklore.
