Dropping her second single from forthcoming EP, Chicana singer/songwriter Doris Anahi's "It Wasn't You" is a beautiful, soulful croon and love letter to her hometown, Los Angeles. Starting off to a Bolero trot that meets lush vocals, Anahi flows between Spanish and English as she paints a picture of nostalgia and playful recollection. Co-written by Danny Murcia (aka Ex Mañana), the single is as much a token of appreciation for the city of angels as it is a reminder to follow your intuition and be self aware about the choices you make in life and in love.
"It Wasn't You was a cathartic experience in search of healing, while thinking of a season of love in hindsight," says Anahi. "Staying in situations although your intuition is telling you it's time to go. I tend to pick at my own wounds, ruminating on the past and reliving memories on loop. The video is a depiction of just that, visiting all the places in LA that hold weight in my heart. From sunrise in Mount Washington, to sunset in Malibu - Los Angeles has brought me so much love and so much pain. Driving around my city is what helps me process these emotions, and release the heaviness."
Etching her memories into a warm music video that Anahi co-directed alongside Steph OH, "It Wasn't You" further captures the spirit of L.A. in passing, with sunrise to sunset shots in various iconic L.A. neighborhoods, including Mt. Washington, Boyle Heights, Hollywood and Malibu, strung together by a top-down cruise in a classic car.
In addition to her new single and upcoming EP, Anahi will be performing in L.A. at The Ford's Kikínceañera, a celebration of LA's queer Latinx music and drag communities, alongside Valentina, Mariachi Arcoiris de Los Ángeles, Neyva, and more. Tickets are available here.
And, Anahi will be featured in Disney Original documentary MIJA which marks the debut of Mexican American filmmaker Isabel Castro and focuses on Anahi's story as an inspiring, young Latina manager working to change the music business. The first screening of the documentary takes place at Summerstage in New York City as part of their Rooftop Films Summer Series on August 3 where the songstress will also be performing.
As an artist and artist manager, Anahi champions the type of music that made her feel seen in her first-generation Latinx existence. Standing alongside and supporting her community, she has helped foster a space for music that cultivates the beautiful mixture of culture and love within the hearts and souls of Mexican American communities, and particularly, the Southern California Chicano lifestyle.
