UP, the new album from Sam Huber, sees the Finnish singer dishing up heaping portions of a rich and hearty Soul stew. In only 28 minutes he lays out the definitive blueprint for his self-dubbed 'Future Soul' ethos; a musical manifesto deeply anchored in vintage soul while looking and thinking beyond the horizon at the same time. With Huber working from his home base in Helsinki and longtime producer/frequent co-writer Tomas Doncker based in Brooklyn, this globe-spanning collection of songs plays out subtly like a concept album that tells the timeless story of a relationship from the hookups through the breakups and getting back together. "Tomas and I decided to focus mostly on matters of the heart because that really is the heart - no pun intended - of Soul," says Huber. Over eight songs Huber spins magic that recalls the heyday of Tamla, Stax and Roulette, but with all the 21st Century bells & whistles associated with a genre bending label like True Groove. "We wrote this record with a clear theme in mind. The only exception is "Hot Summer Burnin'," which, on the surface, is basically about climate change but also deals with lots of other global malaise. Still, it has that deep soul groove." While UP is the Future Soul side of the equation, the follow-up/companion album DOWN will tread into Future Funk territory. "UP is uplifting, posititive and more traditional (even though it has the Future Soul ethos), whereas DOWN is where you Get Down - on the dance floor, on the downbeat - and it has a darker undertone of Future Funk." DOWN will be released two weeks after UP, and the entire project will come out as a double vinyl LP called UP & DOWN next year.
Sam Huber has built a career cross-pollinating musical touchstones from the '60s, '70s and '80s with modern elements like hip-hop rhythms, trap beats, loops and more. With over a dozen releases in the past five years, featuring collaborations with everyone from dancehall legend Hawkman to hiphop icon Bazerk and P-Funk alums Michael "Kidd Funkadelic" Hampton and Amp Fiddler, remixes by the likes of Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame inductee Keith Shocklee (The Bomb Squad/Public Enemy) and Grammy winning producer Bill Laswell, Huber is nothing if not prolific. A powerhouse songwriter with eyes and ears always open, Huber's intuitive mastery of funk and soul is embedded in the DNA of every one of his releases.
