The memory of Prince has hung heavy in April 2020, thanks in large part to record-breaking snowfall across America throughout the month. For Prince fans, the immediate reference is "Sometimes It Snows in April," the final song on the artist's 1986 album Parade.
The longtime fan favorite came under the microscope when Prince's death shocked the world on April 21, 2016, exactly thirty-one years to the date after he originally recorded the song in 1985. Still relevant in 2020, it's just one of the many ways the artist and his legacy remains alive four years to the day after his tragic passing.
Prince's legacy will be amplified this year with the program "Let's Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince," which is set to debut tonight on CBS at 6 p.m. PST. The show will feature a cavalcade of Prince collaborators, including Morris Day & the Time, The Revolution, and Sheila E. Other artists scheduled to appear range from Gary Clark Jr., FKA Twigs, and St. Vincent to Misty Copeland and Naomi Campbell.
The Grammy special will be followed by a wave of new Prince releases, topped by Up All Nite with Prince, a five-disc collection that brings together the artist's studio and live releases from the year 2002. The four-CD/one-DVD set includes One Nite Alone..., Prince's striking piano-and-vocal studio album (in its first commercial CD release); the double-disc One Nite Alone...Live! It's also got One Nite Alone...The Aftershow: It Ain't Over! with guest appearances by George Clinton and Musiq Soulchild; and the Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas DVD.
Ahead of the big collection is Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas Sampler, a four-song live EP recorded at the Aladdin Theatre for the Performing Arts on December 15, 2002, and includes live versions of "Pop Live," "Gotta Broken Heart," "Strange Relationship," and most appropriately, "Sometimes It Snows in April."
