"The Best Gig I Ever Saw" is a weekly column that will see us ask a musician to chat about their favorite concert thus far. This week it's Angelo Moore of funk rock pioneers Fishbone...

It was the month of August 2019.

Fishbone was on tour with George Clinton & Funkadelic with Lady Velvet & the Blue Wolf, Galactic, Dumsterfunk.

Every night of the tour was a big ole dream come true, slam dunk over the top, funky party! I liked the rock and blues of Lady Velvet, and the New Orleans jam style of Galactica and I've always felt that Dumpstaphunk and Fishbone were thinking along the same lines, cashing in on the funk interpreting and personalizing it as our own. Yep, funk is its own reward.

Needless to say, but I'm gonna say it...being able to see and experience Funkdelic every night was like a dream come true, something I've been wanting ever since high school. My parents didn't allow me to go to the funk festival back in the early '80s in high school. But I got to live and be a part of the dream when Fishbone was able to share the stage with the one and only Funkadelic. Man, it was like church every night. Getting to perform with Funkadelic on stage felt like I had finally gotten to join my mentor on the stage of equality.

My dream had come true... BUT WAIT... that isn't all.

I don't exactly remember where it was on the tour, but it seemed like we were on the southern part of the states getting close to the end of the run, and Zapp was on the bill that day. Yeah, I mean Roger Troutman Zapp.

"More bOUNCE to the OUnCE Zapp." These guys were the soundtrack to the majority of my pop-locking routines and dance battles days paying homage to Uncle Jamm's Army in downtown L.A. and dance circles on Hollywood Blvd, Crenshaw's Leimert Park and World On Wheels skating rink.

These guys reminded me of why I'm always incorporating as many theatrics into my performances as I do.

I'll never forget seeing Zapp at the Roxy in Hollywood on the Sunset Strip when Roger Troutman was still on the planet - they never just stood in one place on the stage, they utilized the whole stage and every once in awhile the would break off into a dance routine. Then they would take their stage show and extend it into the audience and it was all high energy dance oriented and funky, I was jaw-dropped.

I remember seeing a couple of backflips going down and a couple of short scripts and stage props in and out of the mix. They always kept it funky and sharp too. It remains a special experience that has been a part of my musical DNA ever since I was able to jump into the race. After seeing Zapp perform live that day, it reminded me of why I'm always putting that extra special Zapp to my sting when I'm doing my thing.

ZAPP! ... know your funky history ... You Muthahz.

Fishbone plays with The Delirians at 2 p.m. on Sunday, January 12 at Alex's Bar.
