KVMR at 89.5 FM will have a special Thanksgiving Eve broadcast tonight at 8 of hip hop recording artist Michael Franti and Spearhead.

The concert will be recorded at 11:30 a.m. today at "New Folsom" prison as part of KVMR's continued cultural program with the institution. The tape will be quickly mixed and then broadcast at 8 tonight on KVMR, in Truckee on 105.1 FM and at http://www.kvmr.org/.

The show will also air in San Francisco, Berkeley, Fresno, Santa Rosa, Denver, Portland, western Colorado, Albany, New York, Asheville, N.C., and Chico, thanks to financial help from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The Pacifica Radio Network of community-based stations will also offer the broadcast nationwide.

"This is the first same-day broadcast from a prison that we know of," said KVMR Program Director Steve Baker. "If you can get it, KZFR 90.1 FM in Chico will simulcast the 11:30 a.m. performance," from New Folsom, officially known as California State Prison-Sacramento.

Franti is an upbeat, hip-hop, singer-songwriter and guitarist who infuses his music with Spearhead to produce a world beat. The San Francisco based-Franti and the band have played in the Grass Valley-Nevada City area in recent years to packed houses.

The program with the prison is in the original spirit of "Live at Folsom Prison," the famous Johnny Cash album made there in 1968. Cheri Snook of KVMR has been coordinating the exchange with the prison that has brought a variety of musicians and performers to the prison.

The famous 1968 concert is depicted in the new movie about Cash's life, "Walk The Line," with Joaquin Phoenix as Cash and Reese Witherspoon as his wife, June Carter Cash. The movie is currently playing in Nevada County at Sierra Cinemas.

Three artists who have participated in the program already will open for Franti - Kimberly Bass of Nevada County, Melissa Mitchell of Alaska and Diane Patterson of Santa Cruz. The show will also be filmed by NCTV for the prison's closed-circuit television system, Snook said.
