WILMINGTON — Michael Franti has announced he is coming to Wilmington.

The Billboard-topping artist and his band, Michael Franti & Spearhead will play Greenfield Lake Amphitheater as part of Stay Human Summer Tour on July 28.

For Franti fans, that means an added bonus. Wilmington is one of a handful of cities in which Michael Franti & Spearhead will offer a VIP experience. That includes a pre-show question and answer session, an acoustic performance, a professional photo with Franti and an autographed VIP item, according to a press release.

The “Stay Human” Summer Tour is a sequel of sorts. The tour is promoting Franti’s upcoming album “Stay Human 2.” Due in June, “Stay Human 2” provides the soundtrack for Franti’s forthcoming self-directed documentary, “Stay Human.”

After forming Michael Franti & Spearhead in 1994, the band released its seminal “Stay Human” album in 2000. Its songs reflected “on the unjust nature of the death penalty among other themes, to make sense of our common humanity in juxtaposition to near constant violations of human rights,” the press release states.

Franti released his first self-directed documentary “I Know I’m Not Alone” in 2004. The film depicts his mission for peace in the Middle East, with a focus on the human cost of war. Franti visited war zones in Iraq, Israel and Palestine, playing music to both soldiers and civilians regardless of affiliation.

“I’ve traveled the globe making music and throughout the years I’ve always hoped that it could inspire small steps towards making the world a better place,” Franti said. “Struggling with the challenges of the world I began filming my new documentary, Stay Human, telling the stories of heroic everyday people who helped me to discover more deeply what it means to be and Stay Human.”

Michael Franti & Spearhead will perform Saturday, July 28 at Greenfield Lake Amphitheater. Doors open at 5 p.m., the concert starts at 6 p.m. The show is presented by the Penguin 98.3 FM, a subsidiary of Local Voice Media, Port City Daily’s parent company.

Franti has played Greenfield Lake four times and has sold out in one day for each show, according to Penguin 98.3 FM General Manager Beau Gunn. Franti not only allows children to dance on stage, last year he allowed a man to propose to his girlfriend on stage. She said “yes,” Gunn noted.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 30, at 10 a.m. through the concerts tab at Port City Daily, or in person, cash only, at either Redix location: 104 Grace St., Wilmington, or 120 Causeway Drive, Wrightsville Beach.

Gunn said $1 of every ticket sold goes to Franti’s charity Do it For The Love.
