From Boomtown to Berlin, Balkan Beat Box have impressed crowds around the globe with their smorgasbord of multicultural sounds. Now they bring their energy and eclecticism to London’s incredible Islington Assembly Hall.
A musical trio formed by Gogol Bordello‘s Ori Kaplan and Firewater’s Tamir Muskat over a decade ago, BBB have been molding and twisting Mediterranean styles and electronic sounds in an ingenious way. Their ingenuity is contagious, since their debut in 2005 the trio have created some of the most samplable sounds on the map including the saxophone riff from Hermetico that was widely recognised on Jason Derulo’s ‘Talk Dirty’ and the equally catchy Bulgarian Chicks can be seen in countless remixes.
As well as their music colliding genres from across the world, BBB touch on subjects from Politics to sexuality without a smidgen of awkwardness. From “Enemy in Economy” where
Tamir Muskat tells the story of being detained by the TSA as a possible terrorist on an Alaska Airlines flight, to “What a Night”, to the sexually charged horns of “What a Night” and “Porno Clown”.
The vast array of instruments and sounds crashing to be heard one could understandably think BBB’s sound could get messy, but the uniting skill of Balkan’s incredible beat makers and never ending list of talented collaborators you couldn’t be further from the truth. The group’s intense mix of klezmer, gypsy horns, dub, hip-hop, funk, jazz, electro and circus music is as complex and entertaining as it sounds.
We are delighted to bring them back to London, it’s guaranteed to blow the roof off Islington Assembly Hall, much like their sold out Scala show in 2015.
