Michael Franti took part in the Santa Fe Yoga Festival
Michael Franti is about positive change. And he was bringing his message to the Santa Fe Yoga Festival on Saturday, Aug. 8. He led a yoga session on Saturday, Aug. 8.
“The tour has been awesome and really inspiring,” he says during a phone interview from Lake Tahoe, Nev. “People are wanting to be positive and uplifting.”
Franti’s tour is called “Once a Day Tour.” It takes its name from his current single, “Once a Day,” which features Sonna Rele.
He wrote the song for his son Ade, who was diagnosed in 2014 with a rare kidney disease, which has caused his son’s kidneys to lose 50 percent of their function.
“We thought it was something that would rip our family apart,” he says. “It brought together the family. We cried together. Loved each other and became closer. That is what the song is about and it’s the inspiration for the tour.”
The single has been out for two months and Franti and his band Spearhead have been working on new material for an upcoming album.
He says the band’s motto is “to love life.”
“To us, it means to love life. Friends, family,” he says. “We want to serve the greater good. We have to love the planet. There is so much challenge in today’s world, we have to rise above it and just love life.”
Franti will continue the tour for a few more weeks and then take time out to record the new music.
Oh, and get married.
“I have been following my heart with every aspect of my life,” he says. “It’s time to get married and share my life with my wife.”
Franti also hopes to do more philanthropic work as well as create some more documentaries.
“In order to accomplish this all, I surround myself with people who share the passion with me,” he says. “This is the only way we can make a difference and give gifts to the world.”
