Three years ago, Angelo Moore, best known as the lead singer of Fishbone, the popular '80s band, came to St. George and left promising a local filmmaker that she could follow him around and film him.

Now, for the annual DOCUTAH International Film Festival, Moore is coming back and helping to promote the end result, a documentary film produced by Tisa Zito, a digital film producer and instructor at St. George's Dixie State University. The film is titled, "ForeverMoore: The Angelo Project."

Though Angelo Moore is best known for his time with Fishbone, he will be coming to DOCUTAH with his other band, Brand New Step, to showcase the documentary.

Zito worked on this full-length feature for about three years before settling on the final product. Zito went to L.A. to follow Moore around.

Zito was someone who seemed to care about the art and was interested in what was happening in the background, Moore said. "Anyone who sees the value in my art, in my music and lyrics and anything else along with it I am ... going to let them document it and let it out to the world."

Moore's music has changed over the years with different bands but in Fishbone, it was categorized as alternative rock. Angelo Moore and The Brand New Step is more of a unique twist of jazz music and funk. Moore said he considers himself a music purist and gains his inspiration from the world around him. The film is a representation not only of Moore's music but of who he is as an individual, he said.

"I liked it when she filmed me next to the train," he said. "When the train goes by it's like a little bit of magic. It's almost like time slows down. Growing up, I always loved the train. I liked when the train would go by, especially the freight train, because that's where all the music and the rhythm is."

The train may have been where Moore started to get his musical inspirations, but now he likes to find instruments that are "left out" of modern-day music. He said a lot of modern music is more synthetic and not electronic, which is why his bands implement a more organic approach to their music.

"I think that Tisa puts that out in the documentary as well," he said. "Plus, she shows all my stuff in my studio which I call my medicine cabinet. All the colors, the cultures, the masks, and all the musical influences that I have around there. I'm glad she put that into the documentary because that's the layer of my creativity."

Besides hanging out in Moore's studio, Zito followed Moore around the streets in L.A., where they ran into several people just going about their day-to-day lives.

"We went walking around Los Angeles, around some roads we talked to a homeless guy for a minute and stuff like that," Moore said. "It's really important to connect with people on the street. That's a lot of what people in pop culture, it is a lot of what they ignore actually. But it's what supports our society as well besides the things that we see on television or the news."

Moore will also be visiting 91.3 Blaze radio for an interview on Nov 4 at 2 p.m. before the showing of the documentary later that evening.

"I finally get to turn the students on," he said. "If they don't know what I'm doing or trying to channel, they're going to have a chance to capture it that day. If they want to know how to do it or conjure it up, I can definitely hit it to them."

Angelo Moore and The Brand New Step will be performing at the film premiere on Nov 4. There will also be a special Q&A after the film with both Zito and Moore.
