Maceo Parker will funk it up in Provincetown

by Wicked Local Provincetown Writer

Sax player, singer, composer and band leader Maceo Parker will bring his funky jazz and hip-hop sound to town when he performs at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 12 at Provincetown Town Hall at 260 Commercial St. Tickets for this Payomet Performing Arts Center concert are $33 to $85 and can be purchased online at payomet.org.

Parker has played with every funk star, starting with James Brown, moving on to George Clinton and then becoming a regular on Prince’s tours. For the last two decades he’s also enjoyed a blistering solo career, navigating between James Brown’s 1960s soul and George Clinton’s 1970s freaky funk while exploring mellower jazz and hip-hop grooves. His collaborators over the years have included Ray Charles, Ani Difranco, James Taylor, De La Soul, the Dave Matthews Band and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In 2007, Parker had the chance to fulfill one of his big dreams — to work with a big band. With the WDR Big Band from Cologne, Germany, he broadcast and performed a series of live shows that paid tribute to Ray Charles and also released the album “Roots and Grooves.” He followed that up with “Soul Classics” in 2012. In July of that year he was presented with Les Victoires du Jazz in Paris — a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to music. That same weekend he was given an Icon Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam. In all, he has recorded 15 of his own albums, and has appeared on countless others.
