My absolute highlight so far this year.
Dub FX is a phenomenon. I am always amazed at how he manages to captivate the audience so quickly that you always leave his concerts feeling positive, even though you have completely exhausted yourself.
As he did two years ago, he performed at Gretchen together with Woodnote. This time, the guests were Alais Clay and Prezence (never heard of them before).
The show was scheduled to start at 8 p.m., so I arrived about 20 minutes early. Gretchen was still relatively empty, so I grabbed a drink and took a seat at the edge of the room.
And sure enough, the concert started shortly after 8 p.m.
Alais Clay came on stage and warmed up the audience with three of her own songs before Prezence took the stage and presented his songs, which I really liked. He also played guitar and keyboard and was very familiar with using a looping station. At the end of his set, Alais Clay came back on stage. They were frenetically celebrated by the audience.
After that, it took about 10 minutes before Dub FX and Woodnote came on stage (it was shortly after 9 p.m.).
Then there was no stopping me. In the meantime, I moved further forward and got a good spot in the middle of the 4th or 5th row in front of the stage, where I basically just danced and sang along until the end of the concert, as long as I knew the lyrics.
Alais Clay and, above all, Prezence were also integrated into the songs again and again, mainly in the new songs from the ‘open secret society’ album.
In between, Dub FX and Woodnote disappeared into the audience to continue playing from there.
A little anecdote: Woodnote had problems with an adapter for his saxophone, which meant they had to improvise a little. Dub FX teased him a bit because he wanted to buy a cheaper adapter than the one he had before.
Shortly after 11 p.m., it was all over. First, I cooled off a bit and then went to the merchandise stand to buy a new T-shirt and take a selfie with Dub FX.
All in all, it was a wonderful evening with great music and people.
